  • I am an Associate Professor of Psychology at the Marion Campus of The Ohio State University. I attended The University of Akron for my undergraduate and graduate studies, earning my B.A. in 1995, M.A. in 1998, and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 2001. As a part of my graduate studies, I completed my internship at the counseling center at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. After finishing my internship, I was happy to return to Ohio to pursue teaching and research.

I teach classes in Positive Psychology (Psych 303), Abnormal Psychology (Psych 331), Psychology of Women (Psych 543), Personality (Psych 530), Adjustment (Psych 335), Counseling Psychology (Psych 540), Eating Behavior (Psych 594), and General Psychology (Psych 100). Within each class, I discuss the impact of sociocultural, psychological, biological, and relational factors on emotions, cognitions (thoughts), and behavior. I also supervise students’ independent studies and honors’ theses (if such projects focus on body image and/or eating behavior) at both the Columbus Campus and Marion campus of OSU. Most of my honors students have presented their findings at the American Psychological Association annual conference and published their work in peer-reviewed academic journals such as the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Body Image: An International Journal of Research, Psychology of Women Quarterly, and Psychology of Men and Masculinity.

My research centers on body image and eating behavior with women and men. I study both positive (adaptive) and negative (maladaptive) aspects of body image and eating behavior. Recently, I have great interest in studying intuitive eating, an adaptive style of eating characterized by attending to physiological hunger/satiety cues rather than emotional and/or situational cues. I have developed and psychometrically evaluated many instruments including the Intuitive Eating Scale, the Body Appreciation Scale, the Male Body Attitudes Scale, the Interpersonal Sexual Objectification Scale, and the Transgender Congruence Scale.

Professionally, I am an Associate Editor for the journal Body Image: An International Journal of Research. I am a guest-editor for a special edition on body image for Sex Roles. I am also on the editorial board for the Journal of Counseling Psychology. I review articles for the journals Assessment, Sex Roles, Behavior Therapy, and Basic and Applied Social Psychology on an ad hoc basis. I am the current chair of the Member Resources Committee for the Society for Counseling Psychology (Division 17 of APA). I have served on many committees at The Ohio State University.

I have also given many interviews about my research to media outlets, such as Self, Women's Health, Glamour, Shape, Prevention, Fitness, More Magazine, The Washington Post, New York Newsday, and the Seattle Post.
