Randi Shedlosky-Shoemaker is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at the Marion Campus of the Ohio State University. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in psychology and communication at Monmouth College (Illinois) in 2003. She earned her Master’s degree in psychology at Ohio State University in 2006, and is currently finishing her doctoral work at OSU, under the supervision of Dr. Robert Arkin. Randi has taught introductory courses in both general and social psychology and is currently teaching research methods. She also has teaching experience in courses on stereotyping and prejudice, interpersonal relationships, and the self. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys providing undergraduate students with first-hand experience conducting research, by involving them in her own research. Randi’s research aims to explore psychological engagement, with a primary focus on engagement in entertainment media. For instance, why do people become immersed in a film or book? Among the antecedents her research has already explored are need for cognition, availability of cognitive resources (i.e., ego-depletion), expectations, desire for self-expansion, and learning versus performance goals. Additionally, she has worked in collaboration with Dr. Kimberly Kelly on research applying the self-regulation model to people’s beliefs, feelings, and behaviors regarding cancer.
